57% of encounters in Australian general practice are with female patients, 19% of which are for O&G presentations. The ten most common O&G reasons for presentation to a GP are female genital check-up or Pap smear, pregnancy or pregnancy-related problems, oral contraception, menopausal symptoms, menstrual problems, other contraception, pre- or post-natal check-ups, breast neoplasm, genital disease, and genital thrush. For different age groups, different problems are managed more frequently.
As almost one in five GP encounters with female patients are related to O&G problems, it is important that Australian GPs are confident in managing these issues appropriately. It is necessary not only to have the medical knowledge, but to also consider the physical, emotional, and mental health of women, their families, and their relationships, and to appreciate the gender, power and cultural differences that can influence the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship.
This workshop is conducted by experienced doctors working in Gynecology and Obstetrics departments in Australian Teaching Hospitals such as Box Hill Hospital, Austin Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women.
