Workshop Structure
  • 1:30pm – 2:00pm: Introduction
  • 2:00pm – 4:00pm: Communication skills required in a medical setting, especially in a GP clinic, common conflicts that GPs usually encounter, and the techniques of how to avoid and deal with conflicts.</p>
  • 4:00pm – 5:00pm: Clinical case discussions and role-play practice
Workshop Overview

This workshop will focus on the techniques and skills of communication including proper greeting, building rapport with patients, gaining consent, showing empathy, dealing with certain patients with serious physical and mental illnesses, dealing with conflicts, addressing patients addictions, and performing an ethical role effectively and professionally in GP and hospital settings under Australian culture. Role play with the tutor will be provided for the candidates to practice under the guidance of the tutor and feedback will be given in the class.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this workshop students would learn the skills of communicating professionally and effectively with patients in different clinical settings under the Australian culture. Participants will also receive a certificate with CPD points for attending the workshop.

Additional learning outcomes include:

  • Ability to communicate empathetically and professionally with patients by using proper facial expression and greeting words.
  • Ability to deal with difficult patient in certain settings such as illicit drug and alcohol addictions as well as the patients with mental illnesses.
  • Ability to build good rapport with patients.
  • Ability to delivery medical news, gain the consent for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions from the patient in a professional way.
  • Ability to perform an ethical role as a medical officer or GP.
Workshop Tutor

Dr Nicholls is passionate about communication skills, empathy and relating to your patients on a level that is genuine, relaxed, calming, informal, conducive to accurate history taking and problem-solving and based on over 30 years of rural and city Australian General Practice (including 16 years as a Clinical Examiner for the FRACGP Clinical Examinations). He has much knowledge and wisdom to impart. He believes that your communication skills are by far the most important factor in whether or not you will pass the AMC exam.

1. Enrolment Terms

  • To enrol, select your preferred workshop date and click ‘Add to Cart’.
  • The full workshop fee is payable at the time of application.
  • Payment in full confirms your place in the selected workshop.
  • Applications close two (2) weeks prior to the workshop start date.
  • A 1% surcharge applies to payments made via PayPal and Stripe.

2. Your Rights Under Australian Consumer Law

Under the ACL, you are entitled to a refund or remedy if:

  • The service is not delivered with due care and skill
  • The service is not fit for its intended purpose
  • The service is not delivered within a reasonable timeframe

These rights exist in addition to the specific conditions listed in this policy.

3. Refunds and Rescheduling

If you are unable to attend:

  • You may nominate a substitute participant to attend in your place at no additional charge, provided written notice is received at least two (2) weeks prior to the workshop start date.
  • Alternatively, you may request to postpone your enrolment to a future workshop (subject to availability), by giving at least two (2) weeks notice.
  • A $60 rescheduling fee applies to each postponement request.
  • The rescheduling fee is non-refundable, regardless of any future withdrawal or cancellation.
  • If postponement or substitution requests are received less than two (2) weeks before the workshop start date, they will not be accepted, and the full workshop fee will be forfeited.

If you cancel your purchase:

  • No refunds will be provided if you cancel your enrolment, regardless of the reason or notice period.

4. Immediate Implementation

This policy and any updates take immediate effect upon being published at www.arimgsas.com.au. All candidates are responsible for reviewing the latest policy at the time of enrolment.
